If you’re new to cruising, you likely have a lot of questions about what to bring, what to expect, and how things work onboard. Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions by first-time cruisers:

1. How can I prevent motion sickness?

If you get car sick, bringing motion sickness medication is a great idea. Additionally, consider these tips:

  • Choose a stateroom in the middle of the ship, both horizontally and vertically, as this area experiences less rocking.

  • Over-the-counter anti-motion patches are available, or you can consult your doctor for prescription options.

  • Larger ships tend to have less noticeable motion, making for a smoother sailing experience.

2. Do I need to bring my own towels for excursions?

No, you don’t need to bring towels. Cruise lines, like Royal Caribbean, allow you to check out pool towels to take with you on port days.

3. How does My Time Dining work?

My Time Dining allows you to dine within a set time window rather than having a fixed seating time. You can go anytime within those hours, but you may need to wait for a table during peak dining periods.

4. Do I need additional documents besides my passport card?

A passport card is valid for cruises to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. If you’re traveling elsewhere, you will need a full passport book.

5. Why do people bring refillable cups?

If you purchase a drink package, soda machines onboard require the provided reusable Royal Caribbean cup, which is chipped for use. However, bringing a reusable cup for water is convenient, so you don’t have to keep running to the water stations.

6. Do I need to link a credit card to my Sea Pass account? Can I switch to cash later?

Yes, you must link a credit card at check-in. If you prefer a cash account, visit customer service on embarkation day to switch your payment method.

7. Can I request extra pillows, mattress toppers, or robes?

Extra pillows and mattress toppers are available upon request, depending on availability. Robes are only provided to suite guests or those with certain loyalty tier statuses.

8. Should I check in at my muster station as soon as I board?

Yes! First, watch the safety video on the Royal Caribbean app. Then, check in at your assigned muster station, so you know where it is. This process is quick, and the ship cannot depart until all passengers have checked in.

9. When will theme nights be listed on my itinerary?

Theme nights will be available in the Royal Caribbean app 7-10 days before departure. Check the Daily Planner tab around 5 PM to see the evening’s suggested attire.

10. Where do I get luggage tags to print?

Your luggage tags will be available under your cruise documents about a month before your sailing.

11. Can I bring my own alcohol or soda?

Yes, you can bring one bottle of wine and a 12-pack of soda per stateroom.

12. Can I bring a reusable straw?

Yes, bringing a reusable straw is allowed and recommended if you prefer one.

13. Do I need to insert a keycard to activate the lights in my cabin?

On older ships, yes. Some newer ships have automatic lighting systems.

14. Is there an outlet in the bathroom for hair styling tools?

Yes, there is an outlet in the bathroom for hair dryers, curling irons, or straighteners.

15. What do I need to do for check-in besides selecting a boarding time?

About 45 days before your cruise, you should:

  • Select a check-in time.

  • Enter your passport information (whether you have a passport book or card).

  • Provide a credit card for onboard expenses.

  1. What is the embarkation process like?

The embarkation process is structured to ensure a smooth and efficient boarding experience. Here are the key steps:

  1. Boarding Pass Preparation: It is highly recommended to print your boarding pass in advance, as Wi-Fi connectivity in cruise terminals can be unreliable, making it difficult to access documents on a mobile device.

  2. Luggage Drop-Off: Before entering the terminal, you will check in your luggage. Dedicated port staff are available outside each terminal entrance to collect and tag your bags. While luggage tags can be provided on-site, it is advisable to print and attach your own in advance to avoid potential delays in luggage delivery. There are no restrictions on the number or weight of bags.

  3. Security Screening: Upon entering the terminal, you will go through a security checkpoint; however, no documents need to be presented at this stage.

  4. Check-In Process: At the check-in counter, staff will verify your identification (passport) and scan your boarding pass.

  5. Boarding the Ship: Once checked in, you will either proceed directly to board the ship or wait for your designated boarding time, which is selected during online check-in. The timing may vary depending on passenger volume and ship readiness.

17 What is the debarkation process like?

Debarkation is carefully organized to streamline passenger departure. The steps are as follows:

  1. Luggage Tags and Debarkation Form: Two to three days before disembarkation, guests will receive luggage tags and a debarkation form.

  2. Choosing a Debarkation Method:

    • If you opt for crew-assisted luggage handling, you will be assigned a debarkation time. Some ships allow guests to select their preferred time.

    • Alternatively, guests can carry their own luggage off the ship, bypassing scheduled debarkation times. This option allows for departure at any time before 10 AM.

  3. Luggage Collection: For those using the crew-assisted service, luggage must be placed outside the stateroom the night before departure with the assigned tags attached. Bags will be sorted by debarkation number and available for retrieval in the baggage claim area.

  4. Final Departure Procedures: No formal checkout is required. Guests simply scan their room key upon exiting the ship.

  5. Breakfast Options: Before departing, guests may enjoy breakfast at the buffet or, for suite guests, in the Coastal Kitchen.

  6. Debarkation Considerations: Due to the large volume of passengers, the process can be time-consuming and may require patience.

18 What is the process for getting on and off the ship at a port?

When the ship arrives at a port, the captain will announce when passengers are cleared to disembark and indicate the gangway location. Guests may leave at their convenience by scanning their SeaPass card at the exit. Complimentary pool towels are available near the gangway for use ashore.

Upon returning to the ship, guests will be required to scan their SeaPass card again. Security checks, including bag inspections, are conducted when reboarding the ship.

19 Is the Wi-Fi package worth purchasing?

Whether the Wi-Fi package is worthwhile depends on individual needs. If your primary concern is staying in touch with family, be aware that cellular service is typically available when docked, depending on your carrier. However, at sea, reliable connection for calls or texts is unlikely without a Wi-Fi package. If regular connectivity is essential, the package may be a valuable investment.

20 Is “The Key” package worth purchasing?

The value of “The Key” depends on your preferences. If you are planning to purchase an internet package, upgrading to “The Key” may be beneficial, as it includes additional perks such as:

  • Priority embarkation and debarkation

  • A complimentary lunch on embarkation day

  • Reserved seating for onboard entertainment

However, if you do not intend to use onboard Wi-Fi, the primary benefits of “The Key” are limited to priority boarding and disembarkation, making it less worthwhile.

21 Can passengers grab a quick breakfast before disembarking?

Yes, breakfast is available before debarkation, provided you leave early enough.

22 Is an 18% gratuity automatically added to beverage purchases?

Yes, an automatic 18% gratuity is applied to all beverage purchases on board.
